Exploring Encaustic with Clay Elements - Sunday September 24, 2023
Come learn and create a unique piece of Encaustic Art using hot wax and decorative pieces of bisque fired clay.
Encaustic paintings and collages are made of fused layers of a beeswax and tree resin mixture. Found objects like dried flowers, paper, fabric, seeds, laser photocopies, pen & ink, bisque fired clay and pigments are used to create multi-media collage. They can be smooth or textured - each piece is unique! This workshop is an introduction to encaustic showing you basic techniques from start to finish with a focus on incorporating bisque fired clay elements. I invite you to play with the medium and explore texture and color along with adding ceramic elements to your piece. This workshop is a collaborative with Ruth from the Pottery Paddock. Ruth will be providing the decorative clay elements - see photos above for examples of patterns that will be embedded into the clay.
Date and time: Sunday, September 24, 2023 • 9:30am–1:00pm
Nancy’s studio: Portsmouth, NH
Your “canvas” - a birch plywood panel and clay pieces are included, as well as other supplies needed to create your artwork. Feel free to bring your own items as noted below.
A few optional things to bring along:
Gardening gloves or similar to protect your hands from hot wax.
Apron if you wish to protect your clothing— I do have a couple.
Recommended! Drink— this is a warm art! We use pancake griddles to keep the wax fluid and heat guns to fuse the wax. Dress accordingly.
The main focus will be to incorporate clay pieces in your artwork, but feel free to bring some other items that can be incorporated into encaustic:
• Carbon based (no inkjet) photo copies* clip art, drawings, sketches, music, dictionary, books, etc. They will be reversed when applied to the wax so it should be mirrored if there is text and you want it to be readable.
*I do have a laser printer/photocopier that can be used to make copies. If images need to be flipped for readability, that can also be done here at the studio. Please limit the quantity of copies during the workshop.
• Fully dried leaves or flowers, seeds
• Findings like printed napkins, old coins, keys... and more!
• Stencils, rubber stamps, wire, string.
Looking forward to sharing this fun medium with you!
This item is for 1 attendee. Workshop limit of 4 students.
